Thinking about it

I've been entertaining the idea of being my own beer and a batch of mead or two. I haven't read much into the beer being process but it seems like the Mead/wine process is a long sketchy road and very small things can destroy your entire batch that you've been waiting 6 months on. It seems like the first few batches while learning are very... How do I want to put it, high risk low reward. Is it really as hard as it sounds?

Mead is something new to me but I like sweet wines and craft beers. Can't stand the piss that bud, Miller, Coors, ect bottles and passes for beer.
